MINE RIGHT - helping you get it right

Experienced practitioners helping you get it right, by providing risk-derived, context-driven solutions, tailored to your needs.

The security risks and challenges for extractive companies are indeed multifaceted and extend well beyond physical security measures like gate passes and fences. These risks can have significant consequences, not only in terms of potential theft, fraud, and reputational damage but also legal repercussions, individual accountability, and broader impacts on employees, local communities, stakeholders, and investor confidence. The ability to operate can also be jeopardised.

Mine Right can provide fit-for-purpose solutions, deprived from security and security related human rights risk assessments. Supporting this is a proven ability to conduct meaningful stakeholder engagement across a wide spectrum, spanning government relations, communities and first nations, and other identified parties of interest.

Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights

Mine Right offers assistance with membership, alignment, and implementation of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR), in addition to conducting compliance audits and verifications.

Our evaluation instrument integrates the latest VPSHR tools, conflict analysis, armed security, and 'use of force' protocols, and is also in alignment with the 'security and human rights' mandates of the GRI, Modern Slavery Acts, and the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

Mine Right also offers assistance with security-related reporting for Corporate Social Responsibility, applicable to various global initiatives. Please refer to the section below for more information.

Theft and Fraud Detection and Mitigation

Theft and fraud often go unnoticed, and in some instances, are even denied. The true extent and impact of these crimes are frequently underestimated. The 'unrealised loss' from theft and fraud can amount to thousands, if not millions, of dollars and should be measured against your final uncommitted profit rather than ongoing operating costs.

Mine Right specializes in identifying and quantifying potential impacts, as well as assisting in the development of mitigation strategies and investigating related issues.

Civil and Social Disruption and Protest
Although an 'Operating Licence' provides the legal authority to operate, neglecting to address legitimate and arising social concerns can result in social protests. Such protests can disrupt operations for prolonged periods, significantly affect finances, undermine stakeholder trust, and potentially jeopardize the continuation of operations. While security may not typically handle social issues, they are responsible for managing the actions arising from social protests.

Mine Right is prepared to work alongside your Social Responsibility, Communities, and Security teams to devise and establish contingency plans for legacy, ongoing, emerging, and potential future challenges.

Environmental, Social and Governance Verification

ESG reporting is well-established, with many companies already having third-party verification processes. However, from a Human Rights perspective, new challenges are arising in the EU and USA regarding the qualifications and experience of those conducting the verifications. It's crucial to ensure they possess the necessary knowledge and expertise in the areas they are verifying.

Mine Right possesses operational expertise in delivering and verifying security and human rights-related social responsibility requirements, in line with major global reporting initiatives such as the GRI, Voluntary Principles, ICMM, WGC Conflict-Free Gold, LBMA, and OECD.
The prosecution of significant theft or fraud incidents falls under the jurisdiction of the host country's police. Nevertheless, conducting an internal investigation can ascertain if such events are happening and/or clarify the context of the events that have been uncovered, thereby helping to prevent them in the future.

Mine Right is experienced in and can provide assistance with investigations into significant theft and fraud, alleged misconduct, sexual harassment and/or assault, and accusations of human rights abuses.

Investigations

Risk-based Justified Security Force

Failing to recognize that security risks and challenges extend beyond gate passes and fences can affect your personnel, communities, stakeholders, and investor confidence.

Mine Right can support you with a risk-based approach that determines your security needs and the controls necessary to mitigate identified and prioritized security risks.
